Business model and activity description

Description
The Institute for High Energy Physics (IFAE) of Barcelona is dedicated to forefront experimental and theoretical research in the fields of high energy physics and high energy astrophysics as well as in related technologies. The institute is structured in two divisions: experimental and theoretical. The experimental division maintains a very ambitious work programme that consists of the following projects: • Detector construction, algorithm development and Monte Carlo simulation for the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) under construction at the European Center for High Energy Physics (CERN) • Analysis of data from the ALEPH experiment at the CERN Large Electron-positron Project (LEP) • Experiment design, prototype development and Monte Carlo simulation for the MAGIC high energy astrophysics experiment to be based in the Canary Islands, Spain • Development of a novel X-ray detector technique for use in medical imaging • Analysis of data from the K2K Neutrino Experiment in Japan and preparation for the next generation neutrino experiment JHF-nu • Development of an Information Data Grid in connection with the LHC computing and • Many projects in theoretical Particle Physics. The activity of the theoretical division of the IFAE is classified in three main research lines: the physics of fundamental interactions, astrophysics of particles and quantum information. The IFAE is a public Consortium between the Government of Catalonia and the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB).
