Business model and activity description
Description
The Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) is a research institute covering most bioengineering fields, from basic research to medical applications, aiming to act as an international reference in this field. The IBEC was created in order to further the development of multidisciplinary research of excellence in biomedical engineering and to become the technological counterpart to hospitals, biomedical research centres and universities in the area.
The IBEC focuses its activity on six research programmes:
• Cellular Biotechnology: Microbial biotechnology, health biotechnology and processes of production of biomolecules, cell differentiation and cell culture technologies
• Biomechanics and cellular biophysics: Mechanical properties at the cellular and molecular level, cellular biophysics
• Nanobioengineering: Nanostructures and surface functionalization, hybrid nanostructures, microfluidics, biosensors, bio-chips, lab-on-a-chip, microarrays and biomimetic systems
• Biomaterials, implants and tissue engineering: Development of materials and structures for biocompatible replacement, tissue formation, and technologies for repairing or replacing tissues and organs
• Medicals signals and instrumentation: Biomedical signal processing, control and monitoring systems for both treatment and prevention and
• Robotics and biomedical imaging: Support systems for minimally invasive surgery and surgical assistance. Obtaining and processing biomedical images at the level of organs, tissues and cells or biomolecules.
IBEC is a non-profit private foundation established at the end of December 2005 by the Government of Catalonia, the University of Barcelona (UB) and the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC).
