Everything is set for the third annual Biocat Forum, 2 December at the Casa Llotja de Mar in Barcelona. The Biocat Forum, which is organized with collaboration from the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, will once again bring together representatives from companies and organizations in the biotechnology, biomedicine and medical technology sector in Catalonia with the aim of fostering collaboration in innovation.

In 2009, the Forum brought together nearly 600 representatives from the business and financial sector, from universities and hospitals, as well as researchers and managers of research institutes and centers.

The agenda of the Forum will begin with an inaugural round table with top representatives of the Government of Catalonia, Barcelona City Council, Barcelona Chamber of Commerce and Biocat Board.

The success strategies biotech companies should follow in the current economic panorama will be the focus of the keynote speech. Staying true to the participative format of previous editions, the Forum will have three round tables analyzing the new paths of biotechnology in fields like food and healthcare; medical technology and how to boost innovation through public purchasing; and the strength of emerging markets like India and China.

BioEmprenedorXXI Award

For the second consecutive year, the Biocat Forum will include the awards ceremony for the BioEmprenedorXXI program, which recognizes the best plan to start up an innovative company in the life sciences sector.

One of the most important challenges today in this field is to create innovative companies that have a vision for the future and transfer research developed in universities, hospitals and research centers to the market. With this aim, Biocat in conjunction with Barcelona Activa, “la Caixa”, the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce and Genoma España promote this program.

2010 Ambassador to the BioRegion

Biocat created the title of Ambassador to the BioRegion in 2009 to recognize an important figure in the scientific, financial, political or social arena that stands out for their work to boost biotechnology in Catalonia and support the Catalan BioRegion on a national and international level.

In 2009, this recognition was given to Dr. Joan Massagué, head of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center's Cancer Biology and Genetics Program (MSKCC) and assistant director of the Barcelona Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona). During the same event, the Vice-President of the Government of Catalonia also recognized Dr. Màrius Rubiralta, secretary general of Universities for the Ministry of Education, for his key role in creating the BioRegion of Catalonia in his previous position as director of the Barcelona Science Park and rector of the UB.

The naming of the 2010 Ambassador to the BioRegion will be the final act in this year’s Biocat Forum.
