ACC1Ó prepares trade mission to powerful Brazilian State Santa Catarina

ACC1Ó is organizing a mission to Santa Catarina (Brazil), from 7 to 11 May 2012, in order to explore the opportunities this State offers for Catalan companies and institutions from the biotechnology, health, agrifood technology, energy and environment sectors, among others. This trip is the logical continuance of the visit Barcelona received from Governor João Raimundo Colombo and Secretaries of State for Santa Catarina last December, when the Governments of Catalonia and Santa Catarina signed an agreement to foster trade relations.

Goals of participating companies

• Detect real market needs and opportunities for each company’s products on the ground.
• Discover the business possibilities and investment plans for the target sectors in Brazil. 
• Design the best strategy to access and/or consolidate commercial activities. 
• Develop institutional relationships with heads of innovation and technology in the State of Santa Catarina.
• Start up commercial or partnership relations and foster the development of strategic alliances.

Specific goals for collaboration of participating companies and ACC1Ó São Paulo

• Participate in joint agenda, B2B, institutional events and meetings.
• Individual meetings with potential Brazilian counterparts. 
• Advice and support in study of approach to the market (pre-mission) and in follow-up with contacts (post-mission). 
• Personalized guidance and support from the ACC1Ó team in preparing and carrying out the mission.

The program includes work sessions with the Federation of Industries in the State of Santa Catarina (FIESC) and the Association for Technology Companies (ACATE), as well as B2B meetings between Brazilian and Catalan companies.

Sectors with opportunities

Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil, has a population similar to that of Catalonia (6.5 million inhabitants), a total surface area three times that of Catalonia and the sixth largest GDP in Brazil. With the highest Human Development Index in Brazil, apart from Brasilia, this State has a strong economic and cultural identity and enjoys a diversified economy made up of a strong fabric of family-run SMEs. The State also has a high index of exports and a strong vocation in innovation and technology.

• Health and biomedicine: Santa Catarina has 215 hospitals and 415 health units. In order to drive the development and improvement of pharmaceutical products, preclinical tests and business incubation in the health arena, and with an expected investment of €2.5 millions, the 5,300-square-meter Preclinical Pharmacology Benchmark Center is being built in Florianópolis.

• Agrifood: this sector accounts for 20% of the State’s GDP and 6.4% of that of Brazil as a whole. The state has a noteworthy agricultural sector (the top producers and exporters of onions, apples, rice, etc.) and meat industry (one of the main producers and exporters of chicken and pork), as well as a strong business integration model. In addition to numerous SMEs, Santa Catarina has five large corporations, three of which have turnover over US$ 6,000 millions.
