Sagetis, a spin-off of the Sarrià Chemical Institute (IQS), won this year's award for the best project presented to the BioEmprenedorXXI program, which bases its selection on key elements for creating a company with high potential for growth in the life sciences field.

This spin-off, led by David Horna, Dr. Lluís Quintana and Dr. Borrós from the Department of Bioengineering at the IQS Technical College, develops products to repair bone and cartilage using the team's knowledge in biomaterials and a patented material (Biotack) that replaces bone cements.

The award includes a 20,000-euro grant, as well as a number of action designed to accelerate growth of the business project, including a specialized course at the University of Cambridge, free participation in Biocat's Biocàpsules training program, presence at one of the top international fairs in the sector or an investment fair for the sector, and the opportunity to participate in an internationalization bridge with one of the top innovation hubs.

Better Care and VetGENOMICS, runners up

The BioEmprenedorXXI award also recognized projects by Better Care, spin-off of Parc Taulí, as the first runner up, and VetGENOMICS, from the UB Veterinary Faculty's GENOCOV research group, as second runner up, with 10,000 and 5,000 euros respectively, and a plan to promote the growth of both of these companies.

The award ceremony was held yesterday at the BioRegion Forum, at Barcelona's Casa Llotja de Mar, before 600 professionals from the biotechnology, biomedical and medical technology sector in Catalonia.

The BioEmprenedorXXI program is an initiative of La Caixa, Barcelona Activa, Biocat, Genoma España and the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce to promote new companies in the life sciences sector in Catalonia (biotechnology, biomedicine, environment and agrifood).
