The startups from the BioRegion have beaten investment records in little over six months

By July 2022, the health startups in Catalonia had already raised 296 million euros, exceeding the total figure for 2021. However, the international situation and generalised stringency in investment call for caution in year-end forecasts.

Barcelona, July 26, 2022. -Investment in health startups in the BioRegion of Catalonia set a new record in the first half of the year: €296 million, more than all funding secured in 2021 (€238 million). This period (January to July) was the best ever, fueled once again by venture capital, which totaled €258 million, or 87% of the capital raised, followed by the stock market, public grants and crowdequity.

Ignasi Belda

He is a computer scientist with a PhD in artificial intelligence for drug discovery and a PhD in tax law. He has founded or co-funded six healthcare startups in Spain and the world and served as CEO of the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) for two years. He is currently CEO of MiWEndo Solutions.

2021, an exceptional year for the BioRegion

The 2021 BioRegion Report, promoted by Biocat with CataloniaBio & HealthTech and ACCIÓ, shows the sector’s evolution in a year marked by efforts in health innovation, and with European and global challenges in its sights.

Barcelona, March 22, 2021. In a year made difficult by the Covid-19 pandemic, the life sciences and healthcare sector in Catalonia reached an exceptional milestone. In 2020, health startups in the BioRegion managed to raise €226 million in investment, the most ever, doubling in just two years from €112 million in 2018.
