Onconet is a project included in the Interreg Sudoe transnational programme that aim establish a permanent network of excellence in oncology through the mobilization of health actors in the health field in southwestern Europe in relation to prevention, diagnosis, care and translational research.
This project aims to promote research, technological development and innovation.
Cancer is a universal disease that constitutes a global health concern. The Onconet project studies the actions carried out in the field of prevention, molecular diagnostics, therapeutic innovation and the use of ICT in the management of cancer patients within the participating territories in the network.
The partners involved in this project, along with Biocat are: Université Toulouse III Paul Sabatier (France), Navarrabiomed-Fundación Miguel Servet (Spain), Fundación Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncológicas (Spain), Fundación Parque Tecnológico de Ciencias de la Salud de Granada (Spain) and Universidade de Coimbra (Portugal). The Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) as beneficiary and the Vall d'Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO) as associated beneficiary also participate.
The transnational nature of the project is aimed at describing and comparing, in relation to a common health problem, the implementation methods of different public health programmes, research and treatments implemented by the authorities of the countries involved.
Among the innovative aspects of this project is the assessment of the impact of translational research on the evolution of clinical practices (research and continuing care) and the focus on the medical and economic conditions necessary to guarantee equality in patient care and equal rights to therapeutic innovations.
Onconet enables the pooling and sharing of resources, skills and the means to access current innovation in oncology for the benefit of patients; to exchange best practices, reach a powerful critical mass and to harmonize therapeutic practice and promote the development of innovations in oncology in order to reduce inequalities in access to health care.
The actions developed in terms of prevention, diagnosis and treatment, processing and digitalisation of relationships between the various data stakeholders will lead to the production of white papers, workshops and conferences, as well as the creation of educational tools aimed at health professionals, regulatory authorities and the general public.
Through its participation in the project, Biocat collaborates at Southern European level in the current practice of big data processing, as well as in research to find new ways to explore big data. Moreover, it establishes transversal comparative elements in the areas of epidemiology, innovative therapies and new communication techniques. Lastly, it fosters cooperation between the BioRegion and other pioneering organisations in oncology research.
