CRAASH Barcelona

CRAASH Barcelona is a 3-month program that helps research teams and entrepreneurs bring to market their innovations in the areas of medical devices, diagnostics, and digital health that contribute to improved health and patient care.  Selected projects will be guided by expert mentors from around Europe and  CIMIT (Boston), the most experienced accelerator in the world. Over 20 years, CIMIT has successfully accelerated more than 600 healthtech projects, doubled the commercialization rate and reduced the time to market by more than half.

The 6th edition of CRAASH Barcelona 2022 in a hybrid format combining virtual and in-person sessions, is aimed exclusively for projects related to the field of medical devices, diagnostics or digital health that have come out of research centers and institutes, universities or are promoted by an entrepreneur based on (or with a link) to the BioRegion. The projects must be related to the fields of medical devices, digital health or diagnostics and have TRL 3-5 (proof of concept/initial clinical trials).

Besides, this year we have a special focus on innovations that tackle one or more of the areas outlined by the Health Department in Catalonia, although we're open to other topics as well. These are: mental health and emotional wellness; planetary health; sexual and reproductive health; healthy aging.

The program is broken down into three phases

  • First (validation), the teams learn to validate their business model by interacting with significant stakeholders and using the Lean startup methodology. Plus, they will work on their pitch for investors and have the chance to forge connections with other top-notch European healthcare companies.  This phase will take place online and in person beginning in September.
  • The second phase (immersion in Europe) will allow participants to delve deeper into the Catalan, Spanish and Dutch healthcare and life sciences ecosystems and gain first-hand knowledge of their main stakeholders. This phase will take place completely online and last two months: October and November.
  • For the third phase (immersion in the United States). Participants will take a virtual immersion in Boston to discover one of the strongest health and life sciences ecosystems in the world. This phase will be carried out virtually in the month of December. After a year, the teams that often travel to Boston will be able to present their second candidacy by meeting the main stakeholders in person and presenting their projects by American investors.

CRAASH Barcelona is organized by Biocat in collaboration with CIMIT.

d·HEALTH Barcelona

Design Health Barcelona (d·HEALTH Barcelona) is a 6-month postgraduate program to develop entrepreneurs and future leaders in healthcare innovation. The course, inspired on the Stanford University's Biodesign Fellowship, has a needs-driven innovation focus and it guides multidisciplinary groups of students through a full cycle of innovation, from needs identification to designing and prototyping a viable solution, as well as searching for funding.

“Probably the best healthcare innovation accelerator in Europe” according to Health Startup Europe, the program collaborates with Hospital Clínic, Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, Vall d’Hebron Barcelona Hospital Campus, Institut Guttmann,Hospital Germans Trias I Pujol and Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge.

The 7th edition of this postgraduate course on innovation in healthcare, which took place in 2020, was marked by the Covid-19 pandemic. For this reason, the clinical immersion and the rest of the program were transformed into a virtual format. As a result of this virtual immersion, the teams detected more than 1,000 unmet clinical needs, from which each team chose one to design the prototype of a solution and develop a business model.

d·HEALTH Barcelona is part of the Innovation Fellowships program of EIT Health, the main European consortium in health, which gives fellows opportunities for international mobility with other programs and to be part of the extensive European EIT Alumni network after finishing the program.

Previous editions have led to several business projects and 95% of the fellows find a job in the healthcare sector.

d·HEALTH Bcn Part Time

d·Health Barcelona Part Time is a talent development program, inspired by Health Barcelona, but with a new hybrid Part Time format, which makes it more compatible with the work activity. It lasts six months and includes a two-week clinical immersion in four reference hospitals in Catalonia.

The program offers access to an innovative and entrepreneurial environment, validation of an unmet clinical need, training by industry experts, design of a solution that improves the quality of life of patients, and acquisition of skills necessary to advance a career.

All participants will be grouped into multidisciplinary teams of 3 or 4 people with whom they will prepare the clinical immersion, receive support and advice from experts in the ecosystem, and training in the development of a pitch.

The participating centers are: Bellvitge University Hospital (Neurology Unity), Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital (Nephrology Unit), Hospital Universitari Parc Taulí (Oncology Unit) and Vall d’Hebron University Hospital (Rehabilitation Unit).

Short Programs

In 2014, the initiative also launched its MOEBIO Short Programs, training courses taken from the d·HEALTH Barcelona program that are open to all members of the BioRegion and deal with key issues in healthcare, innovation, management and entrepreneurialism.
