The 5th annual Health & Bio Team Dating event was held on Tuesday, November 3, with great turnout again: 87 meetings scheduled, 16 projects from the life sciences and healthcare research arena and 27 executives interested in contributing their expertise in strategy and business management. This year, the speed-dating event was held online.

Over its history, the event has facilitated more than 600 meetings among 300 professionals. BStartup - Banc Sabadell, CataloniaBio & HealthTech and Biocat created this initiative in 2015 after detecting that “the sector needed strong companies with solid teams, both in science and in business,” noted Biocat CEO Jordi Naval in his introduction to the event.

According to Yolanda Pérez, director of BStartup - Banc Sabadell, “the Health & Bio Team Dating format has proven to be effective at bringing together researchers and business experts to create new startups and projects in healthcare and the life sciences.” While Marta Palicio, CataloniaBio & HealthTech board member and Chief Innovation Officer at Biokit (Werfen Group), noted that “good ideas have to reach patients and healthcare professionals and institutions. This initiative is valuable and innovative, connecting talent, as we’ve seen with Miwendo.”

MiWEndo, a recent success story

The co-founders of MiWEndo gave the inspirational talk that kicked off the event, before the meetings started. The company is working on a project to apply microwave technology to endoscopies to better identify malignant polyps, which are precursors to colorectal cancer.

About their experience in starting this spinoff of Pompeu Fabra University, Hospital Clinic and ICREA, co-founder and CTO Marta Guardiola highlighted that “meeting Ignasi Belda, our current CEO, at the 2018 Health & Bio Team Dating was key for the partners’ agreement and transfer from the university.”
