Dr. Antoni Andreu Périz is the new director of the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII), after the agreement reached by the Council of Ministers and a recommendation from his antecessor Joaquín Arenas, who is leaving the position for personal reasons. Previously, Andreu served as deputy director of Research Assessment and Promotion at this center, which reports directly to the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness.

Born in 1960 in Barcelona, Andreu holds a PhD in Medicine specializing in Clinical Biochemistry from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). Before joining the Carlos III Health Institute, his scientific career was based at the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) in Barcelona, where he was head of the Genetics of Neuromuscular Disease Laboratory, coordinator of Neuroscience Research, director of the Molecular Medicine Program and head of the Biochemistry Unit. For three years, beginning in 1998, he carried out research into the genetics of mitochondrial diseases at the prestigious Columbia University in New York. His work with the Carlos III Health Institute began in 2002.

Over these years, Antoni Andreu has received eight awards for his research in the field of clinical genetics, and has authored 147 publications related with neuromuscular diseases.

It is also noteworthy that he has combined his clinical career with work in research management, which among other tasks has included speaking at the Follow-up Committee for the 6th National R&D&i Plan in the field of the life sciences.
