Biocat takes part in the network of European and North-American organizations to boost biodesign programs
All of the initiatives, inspired by the success of the Stanford Biodesign Fellowship, will share knowledge.

More than 30 representatives of universities and bodies that are carrying out disruptive training programs to boost innovation and entrepreneurship in medical technology in Europe and the United States, including Biocat, shared ideas and experiences at the 1st BME-IDEA International Workshop on 13 at 14 June in Galway (Ireland). From Biocat, CEO Montserrat Vendrell and Academic Director of Moebio and Head of e-Health at Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Jorge Juan Fernández attended the event.
BME-IDEA (Biomedical Engineering, Innovation, Design and Entrepreneurship Alliance) was created in San Francisco in 2003 by a group of biomedical engineering professors at Stanford University and since then has held yearly meetings that have come to Europe for the first time in 2013.
The workshop began with a presentation from the Stanford Biodesign Fellowship, which in 10 years has trained 120 fellows and 700 students who have gone on to create 26 companies and 510 new jobs, as well as patents that have raised €200 millions in capital. And, more importantly, more than 195,000 patients have benefited from technology that has come out of the program.
Afterwards, bodies that have started up initiatives inspired by the one at Stanford and their biodesign methodology like Northwestern University (USA), KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (Sweden), Charité Project (Germany), University of North Carolina (USA), Imperial College London (United Kingdom), BioInnovate (Ireland) and Biocat —with Moebio & Design Health Barcelona— debated the aims, contents and changes these programs will bring to the innovation system and society in each cluster.
Back in Barcelona, Jorge Juan Fernández pointed out that this meeting has led to the creation of a "European network that will allow us to share experiences and knowledge, as well as opening up the possibility of European participation in the Investors Day to be held under the Design Health Barcelona program, where participating teams will present their proposals."
Design Health Barcelona, inspired by Stanford
Starting in September 2013, the Design Health Barcelona program (d·HEALTH Barcelona), will give doctors, scientists, engineers and designers the opportunity to learn the biodesign innovation process in Barcelona and gain a competitive advantage in a growing job market. Biocat has launched this groundbreaking training initiative, through Moebio, to develop entrepreneurial talent in the health and life sciences sector and to boost innovation in these fields.
