Despite budget cuts, Catalan public hospitals still lead the Top 20 Hospitals of 2013 awards given out by the company Iasist for the past fourteen years. Of the 44 best hospital centers in Spain in terms of quality, operations and economic efficiency, 18 are located in Catalonia. The rest are in the Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Castilla La Mancha, Valencian Community, Madrid, Murcia and the Basque Country.

According to the study, productivity at the top 10 hospitals is 27% better than the rest of hospitals, and the quality of care results in 21% fewer cases of mortality and complications among patients.

This year, 162 hospitals around Spain (127 public and 35 private) participated in the program free of charge and voluntarily, taking 55 awards in the categories of overall hospital management, direct management and six clinical areas (nervous system, respiratory, heart, women’s medicine, digestive surgery and critical patient care).

The 18 award-winning Catalan centers include international benchmark hospitals like Agrupació Sanitària Sant Joan de Déu-Hospital Clínic, Bellvitge and Germans Trias i Pujol, as well as large, medium-sized and small regional general hospitals. Hospital Universitari Mútua Terrassa received the most awards, a total of 5, for overall management and results in the areas of respiratory medicine, the nervous system, women’s medicine and digestive surgery. Consorci Hospitalari de Vic and Consorci Hospitalari de l'Anoia follow with three awards each.
