Design Health Barcelona program begins

Design Health Barcelona (d·HEALTH Barcelona) classes began today, a program promoted by Biocat that will bring disruptive innovation to the Catalan health sector and put Barcelona in the first division of cities that promote innovation in medical technologies in the world.
The first class of fellows was presented publicly on 13 September at the Mobile World Centre in an event featuring Montserrat Vendrell, CEO of Biocat; Gabriel Capellà, director of Research and Innovation at the Health Department Government of Catalonia, and Josep Amat, renowned Catalan entrepreneur and PhD in industrial engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).
The 2013-2014 class is made up of a group of 12 young people from the USA, Germany, Italy and Spain that, all together, have 105 scientific publications, 18 professional awards and 6 patents.
From September 2013 to June 2014, fellows will learn how to identify clinical problems, design solutions and start up new, viable, business models, products and services. Fellows began their bootcamp today, the initial stage in which they will meet and get to know each other and receive the first classes in biodesign. In late October, the fellows will begin their clinical immersion at Hospital Clínic, Hospital Sant Joan de Déu and Guttmann Institute in three multidisciplinary groups, with the aim of identifying hundreds of unsolved problems.
More than 70 national and international specialists will be responsible for training the 12 d·HEALTH Barcelona fellows through classes and workshops.
