Devicare is the winner of the 2013 edition of the BioEmprenedorXXI awards, which each year recognize the business projects in the life sciences with the most potential for growth in Catalonia. Aniling and Cebiotex were chosen first and second runners-up, respectively.

"la Caixa", the Barcelona City Council —through Barcelona Activa— and Biocat promote these awards valued at €18,000, which also include growth acceleration activities and training, internationalization and incubation actions.

Thus, Devicare has received a cash prize of €10,000 and will have access to accounting and fiscal guidance from the Vilar Riba group, the status of an associated company of the Barcelona Science Park, and space in the Barcelona Activa business incubator in Glòries free of charge. Devicare has developed a preventive system consisting of dietary supplements and a medical device for self-diagnosis and self-treatment that measures pH levels in urine and assesses the patient’s risk of lithiasis. This innovative solution aims to reduce the reoccurrence of renal colic caused by kidney stones.

Aniling, a spin-off of the Institute of Predictive and Personalized Medicine of Cancer (IMPPC) that designs and develops technology to improve DNA sequencing techniques, has received €5,000.

And Cebiotex, which was awarded €3,000 euros, has developed and patented, with Hospital Sant Joan de Deu and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, a technology platform based on nanofiber membranes (biocompatible and biodegradable) for drug delivery, used for localized treatment after tumor-removal surgery. Thus, high concentrations of active ingredients are applied to the area, increasing the efficacy of the drug against any possible remains of the tumor.

Public-private partnership to foster innovative spirit

BioEmprenedorXXI is a training, guidance and support program for the start up and growth of technology-based companies in the life sciences. The sixth edition featured 14 business projects, 8 of which have already been set up as a company and 3 that are in the process.

A total of 95 entrepreneurial initiatives have participated in the six editions of the program. Of these, 46 have created companies and 12 are in the process of doing so.
The aim of the three bodies promoting BioEmprenedorXXI is to create a solid foundation of new companies with potential for growth, to contribute to interaction among all the stakeholders in the sector, and to transfer research developed in Catalan universities and research centers to market.
