The Institute for Biomedical Investigation August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS) —linked to Hospital Clínic, the University of Barcelona (UB) and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC)— inaugurated the new Cellex Center for Biomedical Research yesterday. This space has more than 5,000 square meters of cutting-edge facilities and is located at the UB Faculty of Medicine.

The center will be fully functional by the end of January with more than 200 researchers from 23 research groups in various fields like oncology, cardiology, and autoimmune, infectious, respiratory and neurodegenerative diseases.

Remodeling of the new center has been made possible through a donation of nearly €9 millions from the Private Cellex Foundation and €1 million contributed by IDIBAPS. The Cellex Foundation, which is now ten years old, is funding 27 projects with a total of €55 millions, making it one of the main patrons of Catalan research.

During the presentation, various figures visited the facilities, including Catalan Minister of Economy and Knowledge Andreu Mas-Colell, Catalan Minister of Health Boi Ruiz, Dean of the UB Dídac Ramírez, President of the Cellex Foundation Pere Mir, and UB Vice Dean for Research, Innovation and Transfer Jordi Alberch, accompanied by Director of IDIBAPS Ramon Gomis, among other authorities.

IDIBAPS is one of the most productive biomedical research centers in Catalonia and in Spain. In 2011, they published more than 900 original articles in top-notch international journals and managed a budget of €20 millions. In 2010, they started up the Esther Koplowitz Center (CEK), also for biomedical research.
