The European Commission calculates that by 2060 there will only be two people of working age for each person over 65. As the average age of our population increases, there will be more pressure on public services and pensions. Thus, the dedication of hospitals and healthcare centers to developing innovative new products and to implementing medical improvements and healthcare treatments is key to moving forward in caring for the elderly. The aim is for older citizens to play an active role in society and lead the healthiest, most satisfying life possible.

Coinciding with the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations, the Health Innovation Network of Catalonia (Xiscat) is holding the international workshop Inno4ageing on 13 and 14 December in Vilanova i la Geltrú (Barcelona) to bring together and encourage interaction among the various stakeholders in this arena (companies, researchers, healthcare and university professionals, etc.).

The program includes conferences, business models, case studies, best practices, poster sessions and debates on public policies on ageing, the latest trends and innovations in hospitals, Ambient Assisted Living (AAL), chronic disease, telemedicine, rehabilitation and ICT for health.

There will also be a networking space and the opportunity to sit down with representatives from hospitals and other companies and organizations participating in the event to share collaboration opportunities.

Biocat is collaborating to raise awareness of this event as it addresses the theme of a future Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC) promoted by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). Likewise, Biocat is helping coordinate the workgroups for the two Catalan KIC bids in innovation in healthy living and active ageing and in food for the future (Food4future) with the HUBc and IRTA, respectively. Various organizations have joined these groups and, soon, other institutions in the country will be asked to get involved in order to boost the potential of these bids.
