The Leitat Technological Park, located in the Orbital 40 science park in Terrassa, is participating in the European Biogas2PEM-FC project that aims to find technology to make biogas from waste. This type of combustible gas is produced by biodegrading organic materials in an oxygen-free environment. Led by Swedish Powercell Sweden AB, the initiative receives €1,135 millions in funding from the European Commission under the 7th Framework Program and the Research for the benefit of SMEs call for proposals.

The Biogas2PEM-FC project is seeking out reliable, efficient, profitable modular technology that can generate renewable energy combining heat and electricity. Specifically, the project uses a proton exchange membrane (PEM) to obtain biogas from waste from olive-oil production.

The European team is made up of four SMEs (Powercell Sweden AB, Helbio, Ingenostrum SL and Marches Biogas Ltd), three research centers (Idener, Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan and Leitat) and a cooperative (FAECA).

President Barack Obama expressed interest in this project on his visit to the Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan in Stockholm, where they are working with fuel cells as substitutes for fossil fuels.

Leitat is a benchmark center in Catalonia in industrial research, development and innovation. In addition to Biogas2PEM-FC, the center is also coordinating another European project, Noshan, that studies how to transform food waste into functional feed.
