New opportunity for young Catalans and foreigners that want to train as research and innovation managers. The Pompeu Fabra University's Institute for Continuing Education (IDEC), with collaboration from the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI), has started up the Young Talent Program in research and innovation management in Barcelona (Spain).

Thanks to this program, ten participants in the postgraduate degree in Management of Business Aspects of Science and Technology, which will be given by IDEC from March to December 2010, will receive a scholarship to cover 50% of registration fees and will do a paid internship in a research center, technology center or company with a strong R&D&i department, to last between 6 and 9 months.

The Young Talent program is designed for graduates with a bachelor’s degree in life sciences, business or engineering that want to go into management in the fields of science, technology, transfer and valorization, or project development. To sign up applicants must have finished their university studies within the past five years and send a letter explaining why they are applying with their CV before 25 February 2010. IDEC will announce the scholarship winners on 1 March.

The scientific director of the program is Dr. Joan Bigorra, director of Innovation at Hospital Clínic Barcelona. We recommend Dr. Bigorra’s article published in the latest Biocat e-Newsletter, Key role of hospitals in new biomedicine and biotechnology innovation model.

Biotechnology is currently a driving force behind economic growth in Catalonia and the BioRegion, an internationally successful model that brings together all the potential a strategic sector requires. In the other hand, the BioRegion of Catalonia has also become one of the main biotechnology hubs in Spain, leading the ranking of number of companies (25%), entrepreneurship (25%) –which clearly surpasses the level of many European regions- and R&D investment (31%), and also leads Spanish ranking of biotech companies with patents and those in the application process.
