The ALBA-CELLS synchrotron light laboratory, inaugurated in 2010 in Cerdanyola del Vallès, has opened the third call for researchers interested in carrying out a study using this large-scale facility. The experiments will be carried out between April and December 2014 on the synchrotron’s seven beamlines. The deadline to submit proposals is 4 November.

After technical feasibility has been assessed, the proposals will be evaluated by a panel of international researchers from various areas. This panel will rank the proposals according to their scientific excellence. The resolution of this call is expected to be published in March 2014.

More information is available on the ALBA synchrotron website (rules of the call, application, etc.).

ALBA-CELLS is one of the 27 synchrotrons currently available in Europe, found in Germany, France, Italy, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Poland, Switzerland, Denmark, Netherlands and Sweden. It is the largest science facility to be built in Spain —the building occupies 18,500 square meters— and the first of its kind in southwest Europe. The project has received investment of €201 millions since 2003 (50% from the Government of Catalonia and 50% from the Spanish government).

Since mid 2012, the facility has been led by Caterina Biscari, a member of the Executive Committee of the European Physical Society and of the Advisory Committee for the CERN accelerators.
