The Barcelona Medical Association (COMB), the Cecot employers’ association and Biocat have created an initiative called FEPESS to spread the Catalan healthcare sector’s business creation and innovation model around Spain. It receives support from the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism’s Directorate General for Industry and SMEs.

The FEPESS initiative aims to boost entrepreneurship in hospitals and research centers by sharing the knowledge and experience of COMB, which for years has supported entrepreneurs by connecting them with strategic partners, providing advice on business models and helping attract capital. The COMB model takes into consideration basic elements for business projects like creating a good incentive system, identifying key leaders, and knowing the target market, stakeholders and mechanisms that move them, among others. In 2011 the Association received 406 innovative ideas from doctors (more than one per day), laid out 60 business plans, 286 doctors started the innovation process and 13 projects received funding.

As a jumping off point, the study Fostering professional environments (FEPESS) will be presented in Barcelona on 10 December at an event featuring Dr. Jaume Aubia, director of COMB; Mr. Antoni Abad, president of Cecot; Dr. Montserrat Vendrell, CEO of Biocat; Dr. Lluís Pareras, manager of the COMB Business Project Incubation Area and director of Healthequity; and Mr. Marcel Prunera, director of Future Companies. The same day, there will also be a workshop geared towards entrepreneurs, which will cover the factors to take into account in order for ideas to make it to the market, how to negotiate funding for a project, and how to build and grow a start-up.

The initiative is expected to be presented in Madrid in January and throughout 2013 in other Spanish cities.
