From 10 to 15 October, Catalonia will participate in the largest biotechnology fair in Asia, and one of the most influential in the world: BioJapan, held in Yokohama, in eastern Japan. Over the course of the fair, which runs from Wednesday to Friday, an estimated 8,000 business meetings are expected to take place among the 15,000 professionals, company executives and scientists that will attend the fair.

At this 19th edition of the event, Catalonia will be physically present with a booth run by Biocat and ACCIÓ –the business competitiveness agency. This space will have 7 Catalan companies that have travelled to Japan to participate in the event: Rubió, Salvat, Leukos Biotech, Mind the Byte, Ability Pharma, Thrombotargets and ZeClinics. While Biocat and ACCIÓ are raising awareness of Catalonia’s potential in the biotechnology arena, the companies will participate in forums, seminars and networking activities to boost their commercial presence in this Asian market.

Taking advantage of being in Japan, the Catalan companies will also visit Osaka, which is one of the region’s main hubs of the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry. The city will host a partnering event organized by the European BioXclusters plus project, which Biocat is part of, and the Osaka biotech cluster. ACCIÓ and Biocat have scheduled work interviews for the Catalan companies with local biotechnology firms from this region. In total, by the end of the mission, the 7 companies will have held more than 150 meetings with Asian companies.

The aim of this business mission is for Catalan companies to begin or consolidate their presence in Japan, the second largest pharmaceutical market in the world and leader in biotechnology imports. In fact, according to the 2015 Biocat Report, Japan is one of the 10 top priority markets for Catalan companies in the healthcare and life sciences, along with the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, France, Mexico, Brazil and China.
