The 6th SME Bioinformatics Forum, which will be held in Barcelona on 8 and 9 October 2012, is a workshop that will introduce resources, bioinformatics tools and databases from various fields such as proteomics, genomics, chemistry, molecular interactions, integration and research services, among others, and opportunities for small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) to use and integrate these resources. The event will also discuss business opportunities that can be generated by these and other infrastructures currently available to or being developed by SMEs.

This bioinformatics forum is organized by the Pompeu Fabra University-IMIM Research Unit on Biomedical Informatics (GRIB), Biocat, the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), the Spanish Institute of Bioinformatics (INB) and PSIMEx. The event also receives support from the Council of European Bioregions (CEBR).

The topic of the workshops has been selected based on a preliminary study carried out with SMEs, in which they selected their priorities. Therefore, they are particularly geared towards professionals from companies and institutions that need bioinformatics tools to obtain information to allow them to make strategic decisions.

The opening address, on 8 October at 1 pm, will be given by Biocat CEO Dr. Montserrat Vendrell and GRIB Director Dr. Ferran Sanz (we recommend the interview with Dr. Sanz published by B•Debate this September).
