d·HEALTH Barcelona fellows scout for unmet needs at Clínic, Vall d’Hebron and Can Ruti

The fellows in this sixth edition of Design Health Barcelona (d·HEALTH Barcelona), the program promoted by Biocat to train future healthcare innovators and entrepreneurs, have kicked off the clinical immersion phase of the program. Divided into three multidisciplinary teams, they will scout for unmet clinical needs at three top hospitals.
This year, the fellows are doing their immersions in the Gynecology, Obstetrics and Neonatology Service at Hospital Clínic, the Psychiatry service at Vall d’Hebron Hospital and the Clinical Directorate of the Thoracic Department at Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital, which has just joined the program this year.
“This is an opportunity that will surely provide us with many ways to continue giving our patients the very best care”, highlights Antoni Rosell, clinical director of the Thoracic Department at Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital.
Improvements for hospitals and opportunities for business
d·HEALTH Barcelona impacts more than 1,000 people every year, from hospital staff to investors and patients. Over these five years, the 50 fellows that have done the d·HEALTH program have identified more than 4,700 unmet clinical needs at four hospitals: Sant Joan de Déu, Hospital Clínic, Institut Guttmann and Vall d’Hebron.
Of these needs, 30% are opportunities for improvement that could be implemented by the hospitals themselves. At Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, for example, 30% of the opportunities for improvement detected by the d·HEALTH Barcelona teams have already been implemented. At Hospital Clínic Barcelona, some of the proposals have become strategic priorities.
65% of these needs could be transformed directly into business opportunities. For example, from their clinical immersion at Institut Guttmann, one of the teams of fellows created MOWOOT, a medical device that offers a non-pharmacological, non-invasive solution for patients with chronic constipation, with no side effects.
