Catalonia reached in 2011 a record of organ transplants and is the Spanish autonomous community leading such interventions. According to data from the Catalan Health Department, last year 892 transplants were made in Catalonia, almost 20% more than last year. Most of these transplants, about 600 were kidney alone. This organ donations rose 25%. In the third and fourth places we can find liver and heart transplants. The overall increase in transplants in Catalonia comes both from dead people and as live donations.

The Catalan Health Department also highlighted the increase of people who wanted to have a donor card, especially during the month of December as a result of strong action to raise awareness about transplants carried out by La Marató de TV3. If in December 2010 there was only one request of a donor card, the same month of 2011, over  1,300 requests were registered. To become an organ donor in Catalonia, you should contact the Catalan Transplant Organization.

The 2011 edition of the telemarathon, La Marató de TV3 has raised so far, a total of €7,575,948, which will increase with the donations which can still arrive until 31st March 2012. These funds will enable the promotion of research on organs and tissues regeneration and transplantation.
