The Lilly Foundation has opened the call for submissions for the tenth Biomedicine Research Awards in its two modalities, preclinical and clinical work, with prizes of 170,000 and 130,000 Euros respectively (Official Gazette (BOE) of 23 December 2010). The candidates, who must carry out their research work in Spain, can present their proposals up to next 15 February 2011.

With these prizes, the Lilly Foundation intends to promote high-quality biomedicine research through the support and recognition of scientific careers of excellence. In the opinion of its director, Dr. José Antonio Gutiérrez, “now more than ever greater interaction between the public and private sector is necessary to create a favourable environment for investment in R&D&i and to promote an innovative business fabric that permits Spain to reach a highly competitive level”.

Prestige of the winners

After a decade of history, the number and the level of the awarded scientists have permitted these prizes to become consolidated as one of the most prestigious in its field. In each competition close to a hundred of the leading biomedical researchers of our country submit their work.

The jury is comprised by the Scientific Advisory Board of the Lilly Foundation, joined by the winners of the last two competitions for the prizes: María Blasco, Director of the Molecular Oncology Programme of the National Centre for Oncological Research (CNIO); José María Gatell, head of the Infectious Disease Department of the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona; Manel Esteller, Director of the Cancer Epigenetics and Biology programme at the Bellvitge Institute for Biomedical Research (IDIBELL) and Andrés Esteban de la Torre, head of Intensive Care at the Getafe University Hospital (Madrid).
