On 29 November, the UAB Research Park (PRUAB) recognized the top three projects in the Idea Generation Program 2013, which is geared towards PhD students and researchers at the university interested in generating solutions to market needs from their research.
First prize went to MyStone, a device that allows for faster identification and classification of kidney stones, developed by researchers Francisco Blanco, Montserrat López-Mesas and Manuel Valiente, of the Separation Techniques in Chemistry research group in the Department of Chemistry, and Felipe Lumbreras and Joan Serrat, of the UAB Computer Vision Center. This device also provides the most appropriate eating habits and medical treatments for patients, with the guidance of a urologist. The award comes with a €2,500 cash prize and six months of incubation in the Eureka Building.
The Celifast project, a biosensor for fast diagnosis of celiac disease, submitted by researchers Ona Illa, Jofre Ferrer, Jean-Didier Marechal and María Isabel Pividori from the Faculty of Sciences, took the second prize of €1,500.
Winners of the third prize, €1,000, were Enric Vidal and Ferran Sala of the Center for Animal Health Research (CReSA) with their SESC project. This is a service to support diagnostics in slaughterhouses, which provides global management to identify diseases relevant to public and animal health.
A panel of experts in valorization of business ideas, including Buenaventura Guamis of the PRUAB, Carlos Lurigados of Biocat, Carlos Esteban of Amgen, Josep Escaich of Bioibérica, Jordi Carrera of STAT Diagnostica, and Sergi Audivert of AB-Biotics, chose the winners from the six finalists selected in the first round of this program.
"These awards acknowledge the technological and economic viability of the projects, in addition to other factors, such as the degree of innovation, state of development, business model, team, market needs, and the quality of the presentation," explained Buenaventura Guamis, director general of the PRUAB, at the event. This program, held for the second time this year with support from Biocat, UAB and PRUAB, aims to "help our researchers take the last step needed to reach the market, guiding them in the transformation process from a research into a business project.”
