Once again this year, the Barcelona Science Park (PCB), Biocat, University of Montréal, CNRS-INSERM-CRCT and Paul Sabatier University have organized the Summer School on Medicines (SSM9), now in its ninth year.

From 2 to 7 July 2017, 49 students from various countries (France, Canada, Brazil, Germany, Italy, Catalonia and Spain) studied with 37 professors from biotechnology and pharmaceutical corporations and research centers and organizations. The program covered the whole drug-development value chain and not only in theory-based classes: students had the opportunity to visit the Barcelona Science Park (PCB), National Center for Genomic Analysis (CNAG-CRG) and the preclinical research laboratories at pharmaceutical corporation Esteve.

For the first time in the history of this program, SSM9 also featured Beyond the pill conferences to highlight the need for the pharmaceutical industry to valorize its products.

Previously, the Summer School on Medicines has alternated between the cities of Barcelona (Catalonia), Montréal (Canada) and Toulouse (France), but now São Paulo (Brazil) will be taking its turn in 2018, hosting SSM10. Brazil is a growing market with great promise for the healthcare and biotechnology industry. Incorporating this country into SSM will help give students a more global view of the sector.
