Partners in the Interreg Sudoe Transbio project are organizing the Transbio Emergence Forum to boost collaborative business and research projects among the regions in southwest Europe in the fields of molecular medicine and agrofood innovation, from 25 to 27 September in Montpellier (France). The event is geared towards leaders and professionals from companies, technology transfer offices, research centers and science/technology platforms.
Transbio (2013-2014), the continuation of the Interbio project (2009-2012), aims to boost the transfer of health sciences research to market. A total of 32 bodies from eight regions in France, Portugal and Spain are participating, including Biocat, the Barcelona Science Park (PCB), the UAB Research Park and CataloniaBIO from Catalonia.
Success stories in Montpellier
On 25 September there will be a field study with representatives of the Transbio project and businesspeople and executives from the Montpellier area analyzing the successes and hurdles they have experienced in starting up innovative companies and during business development. It will also include an example of groundbreaking funding in France to support the growth of biohealth companies, the Banque Publique d'Investissement.
The event will be held at the Sanofi facilities. Spots in the audience are limited. Catalan companies and organizations interested must confirm attendance with acasta@biocat.cat before 10 September.
Scientific program and B2B meetings
The forum will be held on 26 and 27 September with a scientific program and space for B2B meetings with an online support platform to schedule meetings.
The plenary session entitled A novel and highly innovative treatment for the acute myocardial infarction, on 26 September at 8:30 am, will feature the unveiling of a treatment being developed by Vall d’Hebron University Hospital in Barcelona and Pierre Fabre laboratories. It must be noted that this is the first partnership to come out of the Transbio project, which kicked off just four months ago.
Twenty pitch sessions (5 minutes) by experts in molecular medicine will cover current topics like the discovery of new biomarkers to treat cancer, a DNA chip for ultrasensitive, specific detection of substances, smart nanodevices, global solutions for the development of biodrugs and new therapies in the pharmaceutical industry, and applications for diagnosing and monitoring diseases. In agrofood innovation, specialists will open up debate on the latest breakthroughs in agrigenomics research, biotechnology strategies to improve resistance to herbicides, and genotoxicity biomarkers to ensure better food safety, among others.
Participants from Catalonia are Oryzon, Aniling, Leitat Technology Center, Laboratoris Ordesa, the Center for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG) and the Technological Center of Nutrition and Health (CTNS) of the Rovira i Virgili University.
From the other regions, participants include the Toulouse Cancer Research Center, the Institute of Pharmacology and Structural Biology (IPBS) of Toulouse, the Institute for Experimental Biology and Technology (iBET), Sanofi, Skultdtech (new biomarkers), Genosalut (genetic diagnostic kits), Lipopharma (design and discovery of latest-generation drugs with a new therapeutic focus), Dendris (third-generation diagnostics), Phylogene (food allergies), Lallemand (R&D and production of yeasts, bacteria and bioingredients), among others.
Presentations from science platforms and TTO
The forum will also set aside a space for seven science/technology platforms to present their research-support services: from the Barcelona Science Park (Drug Discovery), University of Santiago de Compostela, IPBS, European Institute of Chemistry and Biology (IECB), Prince Felipe Research Center (CIPF) in Valencia, the BIOIB and the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS).
Additionally, four Technology Transfer Offices (TTO) —from the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR) in Barcelona, the University of Santiago de Compostela, the Polytechnic University of Valencia and OTRI Toulouse— will explain their work and technology portfolios.
