Under the slogan Turning welfare challenges into business opportunities, the European Innovation 4 Welfare (I4W) program is supporting eight joint technology-development projects in the healthcare field. Catalonia is one of the six European regions involved and is participating in six projects, of which it leads three, related to functional foods, rehabilitation, telemedicine and work safety.

On 25 May, ACC1Ó will hold a session to present three of these projects related to medical rehabilitation, which contribute breakthroughs in innovation and business opportunities. There will also be a networking space to allow for contact between the projects and companies.

  • Fitrehab: is an economically sustainable, functional rehabilitation platform that improves current efficiency, efficacy and safety standards. Telerehabilitation requires a patient station (shirt with sensors, virtual environment and control software) and a therapist station (management, planning and therapy-personalization software, and monitoring and analysis tools). Fitrehab offers business opportunities for care-services companies (telecare, telemedicine and insurance companies, private and public healthcare centers, gyms, private therapists, etc.) and technology companies (sensors, videogames, telecommunications, software, textiles, etc.). The Catalan partners participating in the project are the Barcelona Digital Technology Center and Cetemmsa.
  • Mechatronics based rehabilitation at home (MRH). Mechatronics for care develops devices to carry out rehabilitation outside hospital centers with a number of advantages. The Catalan partner in this project is the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.
    • Lower costs for the healthcare system.
    • Increased independence (not only for the patient but also for their family) in carrying out the exercises and making patients responsible for their own improvement.
    • New opportunities in the sector through the development of spaces and devices for preventative rehabilitation, data management systems, virtual platform development (multimedia options), energy management systems, etc.
  • Neurorehabilitation 3ED: this project, which has already finished, focuses on unique aspects of daily rehabilitation and treatment activities personalized through a strategy patented by the Guttmann Institute that allows for the optimization of therapeutic resources by using the knowledge available at any given time.
