A total of 26 companies and 9 institutions from Catalonia will attend, from 22 to 25 April this year, a BIO International Convention, the main global biotech convention, which will be held in Chicago (Illinois, USA). The Catalan delegation, consisting of biotech, biomedicine and venture capital companies, and biomedical research organizations comprises more than half (55%) of the Spanish delegation. Biocat coordinates for the seventh consecutive year the Catalan participation in this biotech convention.

Most Catalan companies that this year travel to BIO Chicago (65%) are biotech companies in the fields of therapeutics, diagnostics and R+D services. They are: AB-Biotics, Abillity Pharmaceuticals, Althia, Anaxomics, Archivel Farma, BCN Peptides, Biochemize, Bionure, Gri-Cel, GP Pharm, Intelligent Pharma, Lykera Biomed, Oryzon , Phyture Biotech, Plasmia Biotech, Readycell i Salvat Biotech

Of the total number of companies, 12% are pharmaceutical companies: Bioiberica, Lacer and Laboratorios Rubió. The rest of the Catalan delegation (23%) are consulting companies related to engineering and other fields including business development, legal services and venture capital. They are: Grifols Enginyeering, Backer & Mckenzie, Bioemprèn, Janus Developments, Performlab and Caixa Capital Risc.

Regarding Catalan research institutions, those that will attend BIO Chicago are: Center for Genomic Regulation (CRG), Clinic Foundation (FCRB), Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), Leitat Technological Center, Health Universitat de Barcelona (HUBc) and the networks BioNanoMed Catalunya and Oncocat, launched by Biocat, organization that, along with ACC1Ó, complete the Catalan delegation that will be present in Chicago.

The Bioregion of Catalonia, with nine booths, will be located inside the official Spanish pavilion (No. 1417), which occupy an area of 418 m2 and will be next to the pavilions of France, Israel, Illinois (host state), Maryland, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Massachusetts, among others. Within the Spanish pavilion, BioBasque (5 booths) and Andalucía bioregions (4 booths) will be represented. Companies from Spanish autonomus regions without established bioregions will be located in 5 booths of the Spanish Institute of Foreign Trade (ICEX). The call for Spanish companies and institutions to participate in Chicago BIO was officially announced by ICEX and is managed through the bioregions, with the collaboration of the Spanish Bioindustry Association (Asebio).

The BioRegion of Catalonia comprises 300 biotech, farmaceutical and medical technology companies, 10 universities offering degrees and doing research in life sciences, 15 hospitals with outstanding research activity, and 20 science and technology parks. Including also service companies and specialized suppliers in the sector, the number of companies goes up to 520. In addition, Catalonia has high-level infrastructures such as the ALBA-CELLS synchrotron, the Marenostrum supercomputer—at the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre (BSC)—and the National Center for Genomic Analysys (CNAG).
