Academia Europaea, a body that plays a significant role in Europe as opinion-makers for scientific policy and promoters of best practices, will have a headquarters in Barcelona. The Institute for Catalan Studies will house these new offices, which will be managed by the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI) and headed up by Dr. Genoveva Martí, ICREA researcher and professor in the University of Barcelona Department of Logic, History and the Philosophy of Science.

Some 2,000 academics from around Europe make up this non-profit organization. Its members include noteworthy Catalans like Mateo Valero (Barcelona Supercomputing Center), Joan Guinovart (IRB Barcelona), Pere Puigdomènech (Center for Research in Agricultural Genomics) and Ramon Gomis (August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute). Catalan Minister for the Economy and Knowledge Andreu Mas-Colell is also an academic member, as well as sitting on the Board of Trustees.

This is the second sub-headquarters Academia Europaea has inaugurated outside of the United Kingdom, after opening a branch in the Polish city of Breslau last year. The initiative has been promoted by the Government of Catalonia in collaboration with the Barcelona City Council and the “la Caixa” Foundation.
