Biocat CEO Robert Fabregat appeared this March before the Parliament of Catalonia Health Committee to present the latest data from the 2025 BioRegion of Catalonia Report, recently presented and published.

During his presentation, he outlined the main indicators of the life sciences and healthcare sector in Catalonia, focusing on trends in key macroeconomic data, research and health innovation. In this regard, he highlighted the sustained growth of startups and companies in the sector, as well as their ability to attract investment and talent. He also addressed the sector’s main challenges and future trends, emphasizing the need to continue promoting policies that support innovation, strengthen knowledge transfer mechanisms and foster collaboration among ecosystem stakeholders to ensure sustainable, high impact growth.

During the discussion period, the parliamentary groups agreed in highlighting the strength of the Catalan ecosystem and the value of the report in offering an aggregate view of a highly diversified sector. They also highlighted the economic weight and international projection of the life sciences and healthcare sector, as well as its impact on collective wellbeing. Key challenges raised included international benchmarking, the impact of the geopolitical context and the need to advance territorial equity and decentralization.

The debate also focused on how to bolster startup growth, improve knowledge transfer and consolidate leadership in areas like clinical trials and advanced therapies. Plus, they emphasized the importance of ensuring increased funding, institutional coordination and a stable framework that encourages public-private partnerships and talent retention.

Fabregat’s appearance demonstrated broad consensus on the strategic value of the BioRegion and Biocat’s decentralized role over the past 20 years, as well as the need to continue promoting policies to maintain European leadership in health innovation.
