Eva García Ramos
Eva García Ramos is the founder of WIVI Vision. She has a degree in Telecommunications Engineering and, among other positions, was director of Gamesa Siemens –a leading multinational corporation in the wind energy turbine sector– and has been on the board of several companies. Her experience with her mother’s neurodegenerative disease, which was detected through her sight, pushed her to launch her project as an entrepreneur in the vision technology arena.
WIVI Vision is developing 3D technology based on artificial intelligence and the IBM Watson system to detect and improve visual dysfunctions in kids and adults. The tool helps opticians in assessing visual dysfunctions, which are particularly important in children between 7 and 18 years old.
Why did you decide to be an entrepreneur?
In my case, it was personal. My mom, when she was 50, was diagnosed with a neurodegenerative condition based on a problem with her eyes. The disease, which she died of when she was 60, was caught much earlier than it would have been with a PET scan.
That got my attention, the important role vision plays in the neural and cognitive arena. Plus, I saw there was a great opportunity on the technological side and from a business standpoint. With my co-founder Juan Carlos Ondategui-Parra, we saw we could use our experience to help people and make things simpler for users and specialists.
What is the most important strategic decision you’ve made so far?
Knowing how to adapt to different circumstances, even when they are very uncertain. Preparing and adapting an action plan for the company in all areas: commercial, financial, product and personnel. Plus, fighting to keep talent on our team and knowing how to adapt and keep pushing forward during the pandemic.
What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?
Always look for talented people for your team, at all levels of the organization.
Tell us something you wish you had known before starting the company
I would have liked to know more about the entrepreneurial ecosystem, because no matter how much experience you have, some things just work differently.
Tell us about a strategy you use at work that could be useful in other areas of life, too
Making decisions, even if I might make a mistake, and always looking ahead with a positive attitude.
And now what? What milestones do you want to achieve in the short term?
I want to keep learning from everyone and from every situation. To improve quality of life for people and make WIVI a benchmark in visual health with a new approach to users and specialists. Our goal is to focus on people, providing a robust, affordable solution to improve visual, academic, professional and social limitations caused by visual dysfunctions, in a fun, innovative way.
