A strategic stakeholder for promoting the BioRegion

Biocat is a strategic stakeholder and catalyst for building, promoting and projecting the Catalan life sciences and healthcare ecosystem, known as the BioRegion of Catalonia.

Established in 2006 as a public-private foundation at the behest of the Government of Catalonia and the Barcelona City Council, Biocat’s mission is to identify the needs of the ecosystem and implement a strategy and action plan to maximize the economic and social impact of the life sciences and health innovation ecosystem in Catalonia.

The main focal points of Biocat’s strategy are:

  • Accelerating technology transfer and business growth by promoting activities to boost the sector’s capacities, with special emphasis on the value added of research, knowledge transfer, internationalization, access to capital and investment attraction.
  • Projecting the ecosystem by establishing strategies and actions to boost awareness of the sector’s assets and potential, improve its reputation and visibility in Spain and the world, and position the BioRegion as one of the main health innovation hubs in the world.
  • Fostering the innovative capacities and developing the talent of entrepreneurs, researchers and professionals by launching programs to drive the emergence of innovative projects in healthcare, provide specialized training and improve skills, and prepare the sector’s future leaders and business managers.
  • Bringing together the ecosystem’s stakeholders with international players to generate synergies, partnerships and opportunities for growth and scaling up, based on deep knowledge of the ecosystem’s assets and challenges, and ecosystem-wide trends, on a local and global level.

Biocat works to maximize the economic and social impact of the life sciences and health innovation ecosystem in Catalonia.

The institution’s governing bodies include representatives from all areas and levels of the BioRegion of Catalonia: administration; biotechnology, digital, pharmaceutical, medical technology and services companies; universities, hospitals, research centers and institutes, science parks and sector support organizations.

The BioRegion of Catalonia brings together companies, research institutions, hospitals, universities, investors, science facilities and support agents, and is considered one of Europe’s leading innovation hubs. It is based on excellent research, a quality higher education system and a network of talent, institutions, investors and companies that are doing cutting edge research and provide the sector with specialized innovation, knowledge and services.
