3rd edition of BHIW
The third edition of Barcelona Health Innovation Week 2025 saw record turnout and a packed schedule of activities that made the BioRegion of Catalonia the epicenter of health innovation for a week.
Promoted by Biocat for the third year in a row, Barcelona Health Innovation Week 2025 brought together hospitals, research centers, technology centers, specialized consultancies, sector organizations, startups and scaleups from February 17 to 21 in order to showcase the richness, diversity and innovative capacity of the Catalan life sciences and healthcare ecosystem.
The 2025 edition featured 55 activities hosted by 52 organizations, showing the initiative’s sustained growth over previous editions. Overall, the sessions brought together more than 3,250 professionals from around Barcelona and its metropolitan area and addressed key areas like health innovation, research, entrepreneurship, funding, digital health, artificial intelligence applied to health, advanced therapies, regulatory issues and new technologies.
Biocat’s participation was particularly noteworthy throughout the week, with various initiatives and activities related to the organization’s main strategic focal points. One of the highlights was the presentation of the 10th BioRegion of Catalonia Report, which shared key indicators for the sector at a commemorative event with record turnout. BIOSPAIN 2025 was also presented by AseBio and Biocat, announcing that this benchmark biotechnology event will be returning to Barcelona in 2027 and 2029.
During the week, representatives from Biocat took part in various discussion forums on the main challenges of innovation in health. Biocat Director of Science Policy and Internationalization Montse Daban spoke at Tech Spirit Health Edition 2025 in a session on translating the recommendations of the Draghi report to the healthcare sector, and also took part in the event organized by IBEC on personalized medicine. Additionally, Biocat CEO Robert Fabregat participated in a session on adopting innovation in the Catalan healthcare system, linked to the PASS program, and in the HBA Summit, at a panel discussion on female leadership in the healthcare sector.
Barcelona Health Innovation Week also featured important moments for programs and initiatives aimed at accelerating and growing innovative projects. These included the closing event of CRAASH Barcelona, where the projects from the seventh edition of the program presented their progress to investors and sector experts, and the closing event of BCN Health Booster, the accelerator promoted by Barcelona Science Park, the University of Barcelona and Barcelona City Council, in collaboration with Barcelona Activa and with support from Biocat.
With this third edition, Barcelona Health Innovation Week reinforced its role as a platform for showcasing, connecting and positioning the BioRegion of Catalonia. The more than 50 organizations involved and diversity of the activities scheduled demonstrated the ecosystem’s ability to set its own agenda, reach new audiences and project Barcelona and Catalonia as dynamic, connected environments for health innovation.
